Ganesha é filho dos deuses Shiva e Parvati.
Shiva foi à guerra lutar ao lado de outros deuses porém, sua consorte Parvati, ficara sozinha em casa.
Sendo assim, Parvati precisava que enquanto tomasse banho alguém protegesse a casa, sem outra opção, ela usou seus poderes e energias para criar um filho, Ganesha.
Ganesha prometeu-lhe proteger a casa e não deixar que ninguém entrasse.
Entretanto, Shiva ao chegar entusiasmado da guerra e sem saber do nascimento de seu filho, se depara com Ganesha o qual não permitiu sua entrada. Enfurecido, Shiva arranca a cabeça de seu filho.
Ao sair do banho, Parvati se depara com a situação, ficando horrorizada e explicando o que acontecera.
Shiva e Parvati decidem colocar a cabeça do primeiro animal que estivesse voltada para o norte, sendo escolhido o elefante, o qual representa sabedoria.
No hinduísmo, toda energia que envolve a criação vem do sagrado feminino, portanto,
Ganesha é fruto da energia de Parvati, a qual juntou átomos e o tornou um ser supremo, além do conhecimento e da sabedoria. Sendo assim, Ganesha é o Deus de todos os grupos de átomos e energias, ele é a consciência que traz ordem para o universo, sendo onipresente e responsável pela manifestação de todas as coisas do universo.
Gan significa grupo e o universo é um grupo de átomos e energias.
