Em 2005 foi considerado pela Forbes como terceira pessoa mais rica do mundo, sendo o primeiro indiano a ser classificado entre os dez primeiros na lista da revista.
Em 2008 recebeu o segundo maior prêmio civil da Índia, o Padma Vibhushan.
