A diferença entre os dados se dá devido ao que pode ser considerado uma língua ou um dialeto.
De acordo com o Ethnologue, existem 448 línguas e conforme o People’s Linguistic Survey of India, existem 780. Entretanto, o Censo da Índia diz que as pessoas podem considerar sua língua mãe o que acharem pertinente. Sendo assim, o Censo da Índia considera um total de 1.369 dialetos e 121 línguas!
No nível federal, existem duas línguas oficiais: Inglês e Hindi. Porém, cada estado é livre para escolher sua língua oficial, portanto, 22 línguas são oficializadas.
